SNICKERS® CREW STRUGGLES THROUGH CRAZY DAY IN KANSAS KANSAS CITY, KS (September 30, 2007) – Kenny Wallace and the #88 SNICKERS® Ford Fusion suffered through an early brake failure in the LifeLock 400 at the Kansas Speedway. He and his crew also suffered through two rain delays and several cautions before finishing 39 laps down to the leaders in the 40th position. A couple cars were forced to the back of the field for the start of the race, allowing Wallace to move up to 36th for the drop of the green flag. The race began with a threat of severe weather on the way, and it didn’t take long before it arrived. Only 12 laps in the caution was brought out for a few drops of rain. Wallace didn’t have much time to gauge the handling on the car, so the pit crew only changed tires and added fuel during the pit stop. The rain picked up substantially just two laps later and the red flag immediately flew. After nearly an hour delay, racing was resumed at the Kansas Speedway. Wallace felt the handling on the car was nearly the same as it had been the day before in practice – loose in the entry of the corner and then tight in the middle. During the next caution the crew added to rubber inserts in the left rear spring and adjusted the right rear track bar to help alleviate the problem. The car was feeling better until lap 47, when Wallace radioed in about a different, more severe problem. He now felt like he was losing his brakes. On lap 60 he brought the caution out because of a spin in turn four caused from trying to slow the car by downshifting. The crew spent several laps on pit road trying to diagnose the problem before sending their driver back to the garage to repair it. They changed both sets of front brake calipers and brake rotors. It was then found that the real cause of their problems was likely a broken seal between the brake line and the caliper. The #88 SNICKERS® Ford Fusion was sent back on the race track on lap 100 in the 42nd position. Nearly 30 laps later Wallace found new life in his race car and was logging lap times as quick as most of the drivers in the top 10. It was unfortunately too late to earn a finish that was representative of the strength of the car. He was too many laps behind. Wallace was forced to ride around and salvage the best finish he could. Through one more lengthy rain delay and a few wrecks, Wallace was able to pick up a 40th-place finish. The #88 team remains 32nd in the owner’s point standings. “You know, I really don’t know what to say about today,” Wallace said. “It was frustrating. I guess I can say that. We had an okay car before our brake problem. I think they figured out it was a broken seal or something. But once we got back on the track before that second rain delay, it was like the car just woke up. Man, it felt great then. I was passing guys and feeling pretty strong. I hate it for this whole SNICKERS® crew out here busting their rear ends. Hopefully we can bring home a good finish next week at Talladega.” Wallace’s teammate, David Gilliland, finished 34th after getting caught up in a wreck on lap 155. Before the accident he was strong and found himself in the top-15 for most of the day. The disappointing result dropped Gilliland one spot in the driver’s point standings to 29th. Greg Biffle was declared the winner of a race that was shortened because of darkness and was finished under caution. Bowyer was reluctantly declared the runner-up after he seemingly passed Biffle before the finish line. Jimmie Johnson, Casey Mears and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five. Teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon find themselves leading the Chase, with Clint Bowyer, Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick in tow. Next weekend the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series visits the Talladega Superspeedway for the restrictor-plate debut of the Car of Tomorrow. Television coverage on the ABC television network will begin at 12:30 p.m. EDT, with the green flag waving at 1:00 p.m. Radio coverage will be provided by the Motor Racing Network (MRN).
